Notice: Construction in Law Library during June and July

For most of June and July, construction will take place within the library to install a fire sprinkler system. This work is necessary in order to bring the building into compliance with local and state ordinances. Since there may be a heavy amount of noise associated with this construction, certain areas within the library may not be quiet places to study.

We recommend that if you must use the library while the construction is in progress, if and when necessary, you relocate to an area within the library to study that is not as noisy. This project is set to run over the course of the summer, so if you are a law student and need an alternate place to study, please see the circulation desk for a list of local law libraries.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Former Rinn Law Library Librarian Gets Presidential Service Award

Jim_goodridge_poder_learning_cent_5Jim Goodridge was one of the Rinn Law Library's reference librarians for eleven years from 1989 to 2000.He was an excellent reference librarian who seemed to know most of the students by first name.Jim always had a strong service orientation. So it was not too surprising that when he left law librarianship, he became involved in volunteer tutoring esp. in the area of literacy training and reading skills for adults. Apparently,Jim has dedicated a lot of time to this endeavor  as he has recently been recognized with an award for his fine work.

Illinois State Library - LITERACY SPOTLIGHT

The Illinois State Library Literacy Office congratulates Jim Goodridge, volunteer tutor at Poder Learning Center in Chicago, who recently received a Lifetime Presidential Service Award for completing at least 4,000 hours of volunteer service.  Jim easily exceeded that requirement with 5,460 volunteer hours. The USA Freedom Corps at the "Taskforce for New Americans" outreach event presented the award to Jim.

From : Motivation, Commitment, Desire, Poder Celebrates Student Accomplishments
Poder Learning Center, Spring 2006

A Few Words from Jim Goodridge (volunteer):

"The first thing I noticed about Poder Learning Center was that students come first. One-on-one, small group sessions, full-size classes– the entire Poder program is studentcentered. This is a simple model all too often forgotten, but not at Poder. This has made my two and a half years as a Poder volunteer a true joy. In addition, this student first approach engenders respect: student respect both volunteers and their fellow students. The Poder environment encourages students to help one another as together they face the challenging task of learning English as a Second language. Keep the student first, teachers and staff of Poder have show me how to do my job, how to foster in each student an attitude of “Si, se puede”. As a volunteer tutor and teacher I have always felt that I am an integral part of the Poder mission. Each day I have an opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of our students. One word at a time. One step at a time. Knowing these things to be vital and true, I genuinely look forward to each new day as a Poder volunteer."

Would-be Law Library Wizard Goes To The Source

Erin_potter_book_signing
Good fortune recently favored, Erin Brown, the government documents assistant in the Rinn law library. She is a  VERY serious Harry Potter aficionado who has scored  an “E” on her “W.O.M.B.A.T.  Exam” !  She recently entered a sweepstakes sponsored by  Scholastic Inc. which publishes the Harry Potter series, for a limited number of tickets to a special book signing by the famed author, J.K. Rowling, at Carnegie Hall in New York City. With the Fates smiling on her, she won two tickets for this event on October 19, which was the only one to include adults. According to Erin, “the children of all ages”, included people as old as eighty. Obviously, the  appeal of the books has long since captivated many well beyond the intended original audience. Since Erin is a serious devotee, she brought her own copy of the UK edition of  “The Philosopher’s Stone” to be autographed by  MS. Rowling. She believes that may significantly augment the value of the autograph in the E-Bay marketplace. But one suspects the she won’t be parting with this particular magical memento for a long time.

Rinn Law Library and Technology Updates

Over the summer months several changes were made that you  will undoubtedly notice as you make your way around the la wschool and the library and computer lab, in particular.

Computer Lab Moved

The law student computer lab formerly in room 516 has been  relocated to room 513 inside the law library. The new lab:

  •  Is smaller, houses 15 fewer computers (45 computers instead of 60),
  •  Is accessed through the Law Library and requires ID card,
  • Requires Campus Connect Login/Password for computer access.
  •  The Campus Connect Login is an added measure of security.

PLEASE REMEMBER TO log OUT, after each use!

Network (Wireless) Printing

To reduce peak access in the lab due to printing and decrease lab usage, wireless printing has been initiated. Three HP 4240 LaserJet network printers have been installed in the Law Library. These printers will serve law students with laptops within the library.

Fourth Floor Study Space

To accommodate the law school’s critical space problem, the open seating area of the southeast corner of the 4th floor of the law library was reconfigured for faculty use. The table and shelving that was in this area have been moved to other sections of the library.

One unexpected benefit is that the Shepard’s corridor adjoining the North and South wings of the 4th floor is now much more brightly lit.

Refurbished study carrels

The 4th floor study carrels have been refurbished. The wire mesh over the locker area has been replaced with a solid wood panel to increase security and offer a greater sense of privacy. New oak and leather seated chairs for these carrels have been ordered and should arrive in mid-September.

Dan Ursini From the Law Library, Receives “Kenneth A. McHugh Quality Staff Service Award”

Dan_ursiniIn order to recognize quality service provided by staff members to DePaul, the university and Staff Council introduced in 2003 the annual Ken McHugh Quality Service Award. Awards are presented to those individuals who have enhanced university initiatives by promoting collaboration and teamwork to support the institution's mission.

As law library director, Allen Moye said,  “Please join me and the rest of the law library staff in congratulating Dan Ursini on receiving the Ken McHugh Staff Quality Service Award. Dan will be recognized for his long term contributions to the mission of DePaul University during the Fall Academic convocation. Dan is the first person from the law library to receive this award. It is well-deserved and we are very proud of him.”

Some words from a profile of Dan by Maureen Spizzirri in the Winter 2001 issue of the law school magazine,“Dialogue”, provides  background and insight into Dan’s role at the law school:

“When Dan Ursini moved to Chicago in 1979 to accept a position as the first resident playwright for the renowned Steppenwolf Theatre Company, he also accepted what he expected would be a temporary position as an acquisitions associate with the DePaul College of Law Library.”

Twenty-eight “temporary” years later, we’re fortunate to still have Dan here.

“It would be impossible for me to find a better job anywhere else,” Ursini said. I love every element of my job and am especially grateful that I have duties that clerks do not normally receive.”

Dan’s career beyond his job, is as an accomplished writer. He has written two plays that were produced for the local Steppenwolf Theatre. He has written three one-woman shows— one of which was adapted for the radio that was broadcast by over 150 stations worldwide and other plays including a seven-year collaborative project about Jewish gangsters in Chicago. He served as a contributing editor to the literary magazine, Puerto Del Sot during his years there. While working at the Rinn law library, Dan has written dozens of  article for the law school magazine since beginning his involvement in 1997.

As a skilled researcher, Dan contributed significant work to the PBS documentary, "Race to Execution", by Emmy Award-winning documentary filmmaker, Rachel Lyon. She is the sister of  Andrea Lyon, Director of the Center for Justice in Capital Cases at DePaul University College of Law who is featured in the documentary.

The comments of faculty member Professor Roberta Kwall, who has known Dan since she joined the College of Law faculty in 1983 indicate why Dan is such a valued employee and friend at the law school.

“To say I feel fortunate to know Dan does not even begin to encapsulate how I feel,” “Dan is a wonderful researcher —meticulous. His responsiveness and enthusiasm are unparalleled. He is also very generous with his time, his energy, his praise. Dan makes me smile. He is a  very special person.”

Law Library Director Allen Moye Receives Award

Allen_moye_award_2007_2At the DePaul Law School Commencement ceremony on May 20, our law library director, Allen Moye,  received the excellence in staff service award from the law school. The award is made to a staff member who has made an exceptional effort to serve the college of law community.

The following is a transcription from the webcast of Dean Weissenberger’s remarks when presenting the award. ( any omissions or errors are entirely mine) :

Allen Moye joined the college of law in January 2005. And as director of the law library, he has one of  the most complicated and demanding positions on the college of law’s senior administrative staff. He oversees a budget of over $2 million and a staff of 18 individuals and he serves a wide variety of constituencies which include our students, the faculty and the public. He also functions in a cooperative capacity with the University librarian to further the implementation of policies which will benefit the users of all DePaul libraries in the university. He has served as chair of the American Association of Law Libraries committee on diversity and serves on its annual program planning committee.

Allen Moye has proven to be a superb library director who is liked and respected by the faculty, students, as well as his own staff. The innovations that he has made in the library are too numerous to mention and  most all of which have been a product of his own imagination and leadership.

For his dedicated service and for the highest level of professionalism that could possibly be demonstrated by an admninistrator, I am pleased to present the award in excellence for staff service to Allen R. Moye.
